Film

I love movies, but my hustle-culture infected brain finds it hard to justify sitting for a few hours just looking at a screen. Video games are ok though, because it feels like I'm doing something. Yes, I'm aware of how dumb this all sounds. Maybe soon I'll be so aware I'll start working on my goal of watching every film in the Sight & Sound list.

For now, all I can offer you is some recommendations and a link to my letterboxd profile.

My taste: as with shows and video games, what I tend to love and rewatch is the cozy, nostalgic, iyashikei-esque stuff. I rarely if ever enjoy horror unless it's mixed with humor or too old to be actually scary.

Fave films

Lost in Translation (2003)

As someone who struggled with insomnia my whole life, this is my number one comfort film. I watched this so many times when I couldn't sleep, I've even started noticing editing errors and inconsistencies (and I don't have a particularly good eye for that). Yes, it's depiction of Japanese people is problematic. But other than that, the vibes are immaculate.

Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

My mom had the CD of this film's soundtrack at home when I was little, when she finally let me watch it I loved it instantly.

Spirited Away (2001)

I feel like this is every person who loves animation's favorite film, and they are right.

Only Yesterday (1991)

Underrated Ghibli gem, lowkey convinced me to move to the countryside.

Adaptation (2002)

A film that makes you love films. I like Nick Cage a normal amount.

Recs

The Boy and the Heron (2023)

You saw me list Spirited Away as one of my favorite films, and it's my favorite Miyasaki film for sure. Ok listen. The Boy and the Heron has the potential to take that place. Only time will tell if it becomes a classic for me but really, if you haven't seen it yet, go watch this film.

Moonstruck (1987)

As a person of italian descent I'm required to love this film, and I'm not complaining. Also, Nick Cage.

Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962)

My favourite nouvelle vague film.
